FORT WASHINGTON, Pennsylvania (WPVI) -- Maddie Gamburg, an 18-year-old student at Germantown Academy, has a huge passion for journalism and writing."I just like the writing process and you always have to go through the challenges and bumps. The Vault: Business Behind Fashion, a new student organization

A passion for fashion may mean envisioning yourself living “The Devil Wears Prada” narrative and attending Paris Fashion Week — an ultimate “Emily in Paris” dream come true. University of Wisconsin-Madison sophomores Melina Zarboulas and Marlo Pulliam wanted to challenge this stigma by providing a way for hardworking students with different academic backgrounds to explore the intersections between their interests a

UW-Madison professors research social media effects on teens

The rush of self-assurance and validation when your post is met with positive comments is a sensation anyone who ever posted on social media can relate to. However, there’s a self-deprecating feeling and sense of rejection that comes with a lack of praise, festering itself within the world of cyberbullying. Teenagers live and breathe social media, and the negative effects of these platforms can have a strong, long-term impact on teenagers’ mental and physical health. Chris Cascio, an assistant

Local Journalism: Why We Are All Needed In The Fight

Not long ago, the news industry went through a pivotal transition: moving from print to digital. While it was a successful transition for many publications, many communities faced the fear of joining the “news desert,” in which they are left without a local daily news outlet all together. Today, Philadelphia’s publications face this same crisis. Bankruptcies, furloughs, pay cuts, and layoffs, coupled with the long-term decline in print advertising have presented a blow for Philadelphia publications.

Making the Most of Senior Year

Senior year has been anything but ordinary. Until now, I dreamed of the day that I would pull into the senior lot at Germantown Academy, rush through the halls and do “Senior Step” at the pep rally, attend my last home GA/PC day and rush to the middle of the field at the end of the football game, go to my senior prom and play spoon assassin. All of these, now, are only possibilities. They may forever remain in my dreams. Until August, senior year was looking somewhat normal. We were returning

Open Letter To Standardized Testing

It’s been about 500 days now since we first met. That’s 1 year 4 months, 500 days, 11,664 hours, 699,840 minutes, and 41,990,000,000 seconds that we’ve known each other. Here’s our story: From the first time I heard that you existed, I knew that you’d suck at what you do. What are you anyway? A score, a number, a data point? What exactly do you represent? For me, you represent what happens after taking countless practice tests. Since when is it possible to run out of tests? I’ve taken a trip down memory lane of ACT land, dating back to 2004 tests.

Standardized Tests Are Not So Standardized

When the pandemic forced the cancellation of SAT and ACT test dates, UC and other schools made the tests optional for 2021 applicants or waived them altogether. Standardized testing isn’t so “standardized” and should therefore become an optional supplement in the college admission process for all colleges and universities. ACT claims that standardized testing is vital to compare academic achievement across schools and understanding whether students are meeting educational standards. However,

Mini-Assemblies 2020

Thanks to SGA’s hard work, this year’s mini assemblies were a huge success!
